Ukrainian Lighthouses Award (ULA)

1. Purpose

1.1 The aim of this award is to raise public awareness and interest to preservation of lighthouses as historically significant navigation aids, to promote and encourage amateur radio and, in particular, amateur radio activity from Ukrainian lighthouses.

2. Definitions

2.1 A lighthouse is a tower, building, or framework designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses and used as an aid to maritime navigation, which is placed on a mainland, island or offshore. Visibility range of light limit is not defined by these rules. Height of light is not less than 15 meters above the sea level. A lighthouse may be not operational presently, but it must have fully intact optical systems.

2.2 Lighthouse activation – two-way radio contacts are made between legally licensed amateur radio operator, physically present at a lighthouse or within a 1000 meter distance of a lighthouse, and others amateur radio operators.

3. General rules

3.1 Ukrainian Lighthouses Award (ULA) is available to Amateur Radio operators/Short Wave Listeners throughout the world.

3.2 The basic certificate is issued for working (hearing) and confirming stations located on or next to Ukrainian lighthouses on any Amateur bands or modes. Cross-band Contacts or contacts through repeaters are not valid for ULA.

3.6 Endorsement stickers for affixing to certificate are available in case of providing confirmation data for two-way communications (SWL report confirmations) with 10 or 20 different Ukrainian lighthouses. The number of endorsement stickers per certificate is not limited.

3.7 Particular lighthouse can be claimed only once for basic certificate.

3.8 A lighthouse, which previously has been claimed by applicant for basic certificate, can be considered as a “Joker” which may replace one extra lighthouse for endorsement in case a different call-sign was used during its activation. Such “Joker” rule can be used only once per one endorsement.

3.9 QSL confirmation is required for ULA, but the cards themselves do not have to be submitted with the application. Applicant must provide photocopy of submitted QSL cards. QSL’s must obviously certify a lighthouse operation, i.e. recognized ULA and/or ARLHS reference number of the lighthouse or lighthouse name must be specified on QSL to get award credit.
